In the face of rising levels of unmet legal need, Justice Connect designs and delivers high impact interventions to increase access to legal support and progress social justice. Our vision is that legal support is in everyone’s reach.

The Self-Representation Law team runs three specialist legal services: Domestic Building Legal Service (DBLS), Federal Self Representation Service (FedSRS), and Victorian Self Representation Service (VicSRS).

This team works to increase access to justice by providing legal advice, pro bono referrals (leveraging our network of over 10,000 pro bono lawyers) and online resources to people who are representing themselves at court in a range of civil legal disputes. We also attend the Victorian County and Supreme Courts and the Victorian Federal Court on a weekly basis to support people in person.

About the role

In this role, you’ll work to

Deliver legal assistance under supervision, including legal information and advice in areas such as employment, tenancy, administrative law, or domestic building
Support the coordination of legal clinics, including preparing advice plans, liaising with law firms, and assisting senior legal colleagues
Engage with vulnerable clients in a respectful and trauma-informed way, helping them feel heard, informed, and empowered in their legal matters.
Contribute to systemic advocacy, including through research, and stakeholder engagement to progress the needs of the organisation and our cohorts.
Work collaboratively and flexibly, contributing to holistic client support and continuous service improvement.

A week in this role

If you were here last week, you would have:

  • Prepared several advice plans for client appointments, including one regarding an unpaid wages dispute and one regarding a domestic building contract dispute.
  • Researched complex legal issues being litigated before the courts, for example a complex bankruptcy issue before the federal courts
  • Attended a meeting with a colleague between Justice Connect and a partner law firm pro bono co-ordinator to discuss service-related matters
  • Had several discussions with clients, pursuing additional instructions and supporting documents for their legal matter
  • Attended a networking meeting with other community legal centres

Our ideal candidate

You’ll bring to the team experience in the following areas:

  • Eligible to hold a restricted practicing certificate
  • You have strong legal research and writing skills, with the ability to identify relevant laws and precedents and communicate your findings through clear, well-structured written advice.
  • You bring critical thinking and sound judgment to your work, approaching legal problems analytically, assessing risk, and knowing when to seek guidance or escalate issues.
  • You are an excellent communicator, able to explain complex legal concepts in an accessible way, especially to clients who from diverse backgrounds and who may be experiencing distress
  • You have great attention to detail and consistently produce accurate, thorough work when drafting documents, reviewing files, or checking facts.
  • You demonstrate professionalism and initiative in your approach. You are reliable, ethical, motivated to learn, and take an active role in contributing to a collaborative team environment.
